       Adoptée en mars 2004, la norme DRM (digital radio mondiale) définit le procédé de numérisation de la radio AM (amplitude modulation). Elle est censée donner à la radio AM un son de qualité FM (frequency modulation), alors que la radio AM était jusque-là souvent grésillante, et donc mise de côté au profit de la FM. La bande AM émet à moins de 30 MHz (mégahertz) en ondes longues (portant sur 200 kilomètres), en ondes moyennes (portant sur 500 kilomètres) et en ondes courtes (portant sur plusieurs milliers de kilomètres). La norme DRM est développée depuis 1998 par le DRM Consortium, un consortium industriel regroupant 70 organismes. Elle est utilisée pour les radios fixes et portables, les récepteurs de voiture, les ordinateurs et les PDA (personal digital assistants). Quant à la FM, son standard de numérisation est la DAB (digital audio broadcasting), qui date de 1995.

       Lancé par la société Benetech et mis en ligne en février 2002, Bookshare.org est une grande bibliothèque numérique (inscription payante) à l’intention des personnes aveugles et malvoyantes résidant aux Etats-Unis. Benetech est une société de la Silicon Valley (Californie) ayant pour objectif de mettre la technologie au service de tous. Dès l’ouverture, grâce à une centaine de volontaires, les 7.620 livres de Bookshare.org sont disponibles en deux formats, le format BRF (braille format) et le format DAISY (digital accessible information system). Le format BRF est destiné à une lecture sur plage braille ou une impression sur imprimante braille. Le format DAISY permet l’écoute du texte sur synthèse vocale. Le nombre de livres et de volontaires augmente rapidement. En février 2003, un an après l’ouverture, Bookshare.org compte 11.500 livres et 200 volontaires. Le catalogue comprend 14.000 livres en août 2003, 17.000 livres en février 2004, 20.000 livres en janvier 2005 et 30.000 livres en novembre 2006. 5.000 livres sont ajoutés pendant l’année 2006, avec un rythme de 100 livres par semaine. Bookshare.org s’appuie sur un amendement de la loi sur le copyright, le 1996 Chafee Amendment (U.S. Copyright Law, 17 U.S.C. § 121), qui autorise la distribution d’oeuvres littéraires dans des formats adaptés auprès des personnes handicapées visuelles, des personnes souffrant d’un handicap de lecture et des personnes à motricité réduite. En mars 2006, Bookshare.org passe un accord avec la NFB (National Federation for the Blind) pour proposer des journaux régionaux et nationaux. Fin 2006, la bibliothèque propose 30.000 livres et 150 journaux à 5.000 adhérents. En mai 2007, Bookshare.org lance un service international.

       Créée par Denis Zwirn en mars 2000, la société Numilog est spécialisée dans la fabrication et la distribution de livres numériques. Numilog lance une librairie en ligne en octobre 2000. En 2003, le catalogue comprend 3.500 titres (incluant les numéros de revues) en français et en anglais, aux formats PDF (portable document format, lisible par l’Adobe Reader), LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature", lisible par le Microsoft Reader) et PRC (Palm resource, lisible par le Mobipocket Reader), grâce à un partenariat avec une quarantaine d’éditeurs. Numilog devient la principale librairie francophone de livres numériques, suite à des accords avec de nombreux éditeurs (Gallimard, Albin Michel, Eyrolles, Hermès Science, Pearson Education France, etc.). Numilog propose aussi des livres audio. Une librairie anglophone est lancée suite à des accords de diffusion conclus avec plusieurs éditeurs anglo-saxons (Springer-Kluwer, Oxford University Press, Taylor & Francis, Kogan Page, etc.). Les livres numériques sont proposés dans différents formats permettant leur lecture sur tout appareil électronique (ordinateur, assistant personnel, téléphone portable, smartphone, etc.). Numilog propose aussi un système de bibliothèque en ligne (permettant de prêter des livres numériques) destiné aux bibliothèques, aux administrations et aux entreprises. Numilog est également prestataire de services pour les technologies DRM (digital rights management). En janvier 2006, Numilog met sur pied la plateforme de la Bibliothèque numérique pour le Handicap (BNH), une initiative de la ville de Boulogne-Billancourt (région parisienne). En décembre 2006, le catalogue de Numilog comprend 35.000 livres numériques et 200 éditeurs partenaires, dont 60 éditeurs francophones.
